Who

WHO IS AVIA-grafix?

Hello, I'm Patrick Olave, an airline enthusiast from childhood, and an illustrator and owner of AVIA-grafix.

AAAAAAAA

I began AVIA-grafix in 2015 as a casual side project of my creative business StudioDusk, initially creating aircraft profile prints on commission, and formally registering the name 3 years later. My aim is to create illustrations of airliners on various mediums for enthusiasts, aviation professionals, collectors, and historians.

MY ILLUSTRATION PROCESS
I draw all aircraft from scratch to match real aircraft and liveries. An aircraft profile can take a couple of months to create, and a complex livery can take up to 1 month to complete, including adjustments and colour matching.

I follow a meticulous process that often includes hundreds of hours of research, trawling through manuals, books and periodicals, tens of thousands of photographs, diagrams, plans, some of which is available online. I participate in forums and refer to museums. I estimate that over 60% of my work is research. To create my illustrations I primarily rely on two Adobe products, Illustrator and Photoshop.

PRE-DIGITAL ERA CHALLENGES
A lot of my subject matter is from a pre-digital era, therefore clear, crisp imagery of aircraft is not as readily available as they are for current generation aircraft, as well, many airlines only existed for a very short period, therefore finding any photographs is often very difficult, especially those that predate the common use of the www.

PATRICK'S STORY
Since I was born my family have lived in 2 capital cities under flight paths to local airports. I have watched aircraft on short finals or departures ranging from C46, DC-3 and SE210, to the current.

The skies above me are filled with eye-candy. By the time I was a teenager I'd  travelled on DC-6, DC-8, DC-9, DC-10, 707, 727, 737, 747, 767, PA-31, F27, F28, A300, EMB-110, and on LADECO, LAN-Chile, QANTAS, Pan Am, Air New Zealand, NAC, Ansett, TAA, UTA, Air New South Wales, East-West Airlines, Hazelton Airlines, Masling, Air Great Lakes, and a few others.

I first started drawing airliner profiles when I was a teenager. Dad would take me to Sydney airport, along the perimeter fence extending out to Botany Bay, and we'd sit there for hours just looking at the planes as they taxied by after landing, or on their way for a smokey, noisy, smelly departure.

I've worked in the airline industry, and have also exhibited my art work. I set up my first online presence, a web design and graphic design business in 1998, and in 2003 my first online airline gallery focusing on recording the illustrated history of Chilean airlines, to showcase my love of airlines and to assist airline historians, hobbyists and enthusiasts. I suspended this in 2015, and I still receive emails from hobbyists, enthusiasts and historians asking when that will return.

In 2015 I started creating aircraft profile prints on commission, and formally registered the name 3 years later, and we continue to evolve.

I hope you find something for yourself or someone you know, or maybe you'll find some eye-candy that will rekindle nice memories.

Cheers!
Patrick
